How to classify RapidShare, Megaupload, etc. (One-Click Hosting sites)

Solution

Overview

File downloads from One-Click Hosting sites, such as Rapidshare and Megaupload, are typically classified as HTTP.

Cause
Resolution

Traffic, including file downloads, from One-Click Hosting sites may often be classified by the domain name contained in the HTTP header’s ‘Host’ field.  The hostnames typically take forms similar to 'rs927.rapidshare.com' and 'www915.megaupload.com'.  When creating a traffic class in PacketShaper, select 'HTTP (web) as the service, then specify the domain name, including a wildcard, in the ‘Criterion’ field.

Rapidshare

Through the web interface:

  • Name: Rapidshare
  • Service: HTTP (Web)
  • Criterion: Host DNS Name or IP Address:  *.rapidshare.com

Or through command-line:

class new /Inbound Rapidshare inside TCP service:client outside service:HTTP “web:host:*.rapidshare.com”

Megaupload

Through the web interface:

  • Name: Megaupload
  • Service: HTTP (Web)
  • Criterion: Host DNS Name or IP Address: *.megaupload.com

Or through the command-line:

class new /Inbound Megaupload inside TCP service:client outside service:HTTP “web:host:*.megaupload.com”
