How to create a database on Bluecoat Reporter?

Reporter uses a structured, proprietary database, with data kept in filenames, as listed below. As the database structure is proprietary, this document is by no means a complete description of all the files, and what they do.   It is merely available to help in the troubleshooting of Bluecoat Reporter for customers, and Bluecoat Support staff.

Data is kept structured by the use of node names, and is stored in a series of files under the database folder name.  Each folder has a name that is consistent with the hash name it was given when created.  To find out what  this name is, you can follow these steps.

 Summary of the folder structure:

  • At the root of each is a list of files that have the extensions *.set
  • In this same folder is kept a binary file, that contains the statistics for this database- logsources.dat
    • Statistics, such as a a log source history, and how large the database is are kept in this file.
  • Under this folder are folders that a numbered, and created daily, which contain files that are named with these extensions.
    • *.bag
    • *.main
    • *.sum
    • *.cnt
    • *.hip
  • On some days, you can see more than one of these folders created.

Deleting your database:

NOTE: Bluecoat does not support the manual destruction, or modification of any of the above files.  You can, however, delete the entire database, through the User interface,  by following these steps:

  • Login to Reporter with you admin account.
  • Navigate to the administration section of the User Interface.
  • Click on General Settings.
  • Click on Data Settings.
  • Click on Databases
  • Choose the database you want to delete, and use the drop down list, on the left hand side, to choose delete.


To increase performance of certain pre-for mated Reports, we have indexed certain pairs, and triplets of data.  For more information on what pairs, and triplets are indexed by default, and how to expand to speed up your favorite report, please see 000009715


If you have configured Reporter in a default you databases will be kept at these locations.

  • For linux, it will be in mount point of /opt/bc/reporter/databases/<hashname-of-database>
  • For Windows it will be <installed drive>:Program FilesBluecoat Reporter 9databases<hashname-of-database>

Creating your database:

To create a database, follow these steps.

  • Login to Reporter with your admin account.
  • Navigate to the administration section of the User Interface
  • Click on Data Settings.
  • Click on Databases
  • Click on the "New"  button.
    • If you are sending up access logs from all users on your SG, choose "Proxy SG"
    • If you are sending up access logs from your proxy client users, choose "Proxy Client"
  • Next choose a name for your database.
  • After this, you can choose to link a log source to your database, and when you would like data to be expired.
  • At the end of this wizard, you will be asked the location you want this database, and where the reports for it will be archived,  to be created in. The wizard will suggest the default location, but you can navigate to any location you want.  However, if you choose a drive, or a mount point, that is not the same as where Reporter is installed to, Reporter will not monitor it for disk space, and alert you.


 As mentioned above, each database folder is created with a a name of your choice.  However, behind the scenes Reporter using a hashname for each database.    To find out what folder correlates to which database you create, follow these steps.

  • Login to Reporter with your admin account.
  • Navigate to the administration section of the User Interface.
  • Click on System overview.
  • Ensure you are on the System Diagnositics screen.
  • Scroll down until you see the Database overview section.
  • Find the database of your choice here, and note the location.
  • The last folder name, in the path, is the hashname of your database.


 Moving the database:

Set other options:

  • Login to Reporter with your admin account.
  • Navigate to the administration section of the User Interface.
  • Click on General settings, and select databases.
  • Over on the far right, you will see 'actions', select that, and selec 'set other options'
  • Here you will be able to change these things per database.
    • Cost per megabyte in .1 of a dollar.
    • Cost per hour at 20 dollars per hour.
    • Limitatoins of rows exported in reports.- See 000016786
