ThreatPulse Mobility client wont connect. Debug shows it is trying to use a non-existent proxy.

Solution

Overview

Mobility client fails to connect to the ThreatPulse service due to proxy settings which are not set in the Mobility clients 'Proxy settings'  menu.

Mobility client appears to be picking up proxy settings for somewhere else.

 

Cause
Resolution

Under WindowsXP check the following windows command "proxycfg":

Current WinHTTP proxy settings under:
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
    SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\
      WinHttpSettings :

    Proxy Server(s) :  10.91.14.1:8080 <--- Proxy has been defined
    Bypass List     :  (none)

If you see a Proxy setting here, the Mobility client will attempt to use this proxy over any manual proxy settings you have defined in the Mobility software. If the proxy configured in proxycfg does not exist, or the IP address is invalid, Mobility will fail to connect (it does not attempt to go 'direct' if this proxy fails).

To clear this proxy setting, run:

Updated proxy settings
Current WinHTTP proxy settings under:
  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
    SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections\
      WinHttpSettings :

     Direct access (no proxy server).

The equivalent command under Windows 7 is 'netsh winhttp show proxy'

*Only change these settings if you understand what this command does and why it might have existed in the first place. These commands are Windows OS commands and not directly related to the Mobility client software*.
